Government Background Check

            A government background check is more thorough than a normal background check that you might receive for work.  The background checks that are given to all government employees (as the law requires) are extensive for a number of reasons.  The people obtaining government jobs are often times given access to sensitive or restricted and classified information.  This information, if leaked or used inappropriately, can cause serious security risks to the United States government and our freedom.  Letting this information be accessible without a serious background check can mean giving it to the wrong person.  The government wants to be sure that you are the right kind of person to be working for them and accessing their records and information.

            Getting a government background check takes time.  There are many steps to complete before they can be sure you are the right kind of person.  Many people who have never been in serious legal trouble will not be able to pass a background check done by the United States government.  This process is very rigorous.  Being confident in all the facts is key to making a conclusion in any case.  This process is so effective in determining qualified individuals that other places of employment have begun requiring them as well.  Some people do not like having to pass one of these.

            People think a government background check is intrusive.  This process invades your privacy from the past and the present.  You can have many things from your past dug up while going through a government background check.  Any sealed crimes or deferments will show up when you are taking one.  You cannot hide anything from your past during one.  If you are found out to be withholding or lying about any of the information, you will not pass or receive the job.  Employers are becoming fonder and fonder of these kinds of background check.  Some places do not have right or reason to institute these and have not done so yet for this reason.  When applying for a job you may want to be clear up front on what kinds of background check you are willing to take.  If you do not want to be subject to one of these you may want to inform an employer for which you are applying immediately.  Begin upfront about your refusal to take one saves you time and frustration and saves the employer money.
